during the 268 years (approx) of rule by a military dictatorship in japan (approx.1600 to 1868) japan developed a growing, prosperous middle class and a proto-modernity that enabled the quick conversion to western modernity in the late 19th century.
a feature of the era was a growing book publishing industry.
people could make a living as authors, artists/illustrators, printers and selling books.

author tom magstadt phd.
who has written among other works- 'an empire if you can keep it' has been chronicling american trends for decades.. 'angry white guys: the roots of reactionary america' explores a specific period in american history, 1960-1980, the defeat of richard nixon to the election of ronald reagan.
he takes as a contrast the cities of nagasaki and hiroshima, which were destroyed by nuclear bombs, and now thrive a industiral centers to cities like detroit which are on the verge of bankruptcy and asks- why.. the era of ike eisenhower seems tame and agreeable (if one ignors the racial subjugation) and seen through the author's eyes as one where democrats and republicans got along.

What a great post !! What you described, is exactly what my family in Canda, thought about
American politics during those years.
okay we've all beat our chest, lamented and throttled the dead horse of aawa.. time to move on!.
i suggest those of us on j-w.n who care about creating something the right way take the trouble to get the framework going.. let's do the grunt work and get the nattering, debates, naming and organizing already pre-approved so that "others" who have the talent, ability, motivation and resources can move in and turn the key!.
because it was not done before.. there is more wisdom on this discussion board in our vast numbers than there could possibly be in a virtual boardroom with 8 people brain-storming.. that isn't an insult--it is just a statistical fact!.
I used to be a JW -- but I'm alright now!
Self-righteous? Delusional? -- you'll love the Kingdom Hall
Cults shoot their weak -- just like Jehovahs Witnesses (pic of SHUN GUN)
1914-2014 new light grows dim
Science and Jehovahs Witnesses? -- I don't THINK so
Governing Body --- the NEXT world power
JWs want YOUR house and car -- the Watchtower just wants your MONEY
Jehovahs Witnesses -- forget Jesus, we've got the GB
JW Bible Study this week -- How to SHUN your friends and family
''Why, Jehovahs Witnesses are the THINKINGEST people on earth''
Mommy, why is Jehovah going to kill everyone? -- ..because the Watchtower sez so..
Mommy.. who is Jesus? -- ..oh, he was some mediator guy before the Governing Body
Watchtower education -- teaching the deaf to masturbate
Do we have to go door to door again today? ...you want a shepherding call?,, is that what you want?

No one in our free family will utter the abhorent phrase ''...the truth...'' in regards to the watchtower cult.
I have a great distaste for the term ''TTATT'' likewise. Watchtower/Jehovahs Witnesses and the word TRUTH should not be found
in the same sentence. They have dogma, interpretations, works, meetings, books, and real estate but not anything as valuable as truth.

Remember the story about the resistance / activist boy who was 'shot'/marked by the authorities, with a colorful, permanent indelible dye?
Non lethal, but they only had to wait until he finally showed himself, to be arrested and dealt-with at their liesure.
When his village realized his identity had been compromised, they did the only thing possible - they ALL DYED THEMSELVES the same color,
making it impossible to target any individual.
Too bad thousands more names weren't added to that page. A few elderettes, some pioneers, some real ass kissers, that hounding
elder and of course, a CO and GB member, would really make for a good international witch-hunt. Think of the paranoia .... ahhh damn...
The evils of facebook could have been a wonderful asset...
While I am embarrassed for those good souls who may have unwittingly contributed to a stressful situation, I am positively ASHAMED of the
abusive , selfrighteous scorn and condemnation that seems to lend purpose to some mean, small spirits among us.
I hope AAWA makes a complete recovery, and presses on with their mission to help the legions screwed over by the WTS. I am not going to burn
the barn because the roof leaked .
I've lost my brown horned lizards...here's a picture of them. If you find them, could you bring them to the kingdumb hall?
as some of you know, i had no job last year, then finally got something in an industry that i know nothing about.
the environment and people haven't been the best, but i had to stick it out and hope that things would improve.
i have kept my eye and ears open for opportunities more in my field of expertise - which is print advertising.. i sent through my cv for a job i saw advertised in the newspaper for an advertising sales rep - applied and now i have an interview to go too tomorrow.. i've learnt not to get my hopes up - i am glad for the interview and i hope it goes well..
LouBelle ...
wishing you the best on your interview dear.

the mother who says having these two children is the biggest regret of her lifeisabella dutton, 57, says she wishes she had remained childless'i resented the time my children consumed.
like parasites, they took from me and didn't give back'.
isabella dutton would have been happier not having children.
Honesty and responsible convictions...she did (and is still doing) what a great parent would...kudos to the lady!
so after the memorial hell http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/249700/1/memorial-hell my wife totally missed the special talk and i only just realized from jwn that she has.
in fact last sunday i took her out to a park and we had nice time in the fresh air enjoying nature.
also she has taken up improving her congnitive skills on luminosity and today said she might actaully go and study some algebra on khan academy which i had suggested instead of spending money on luminosity.

Could you bring home a 'classic' such as Animal Farm or 1984 and between
your reading sessions, leave it on the coffee table or sofa?
